A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit identification number assigned to healthcare providers in the United States. It is issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) through the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES).

Every licensed healthcare provider who submits claims to Medicare, Medicaid, or most private insurers is required to have an NPI. This includes:

• Physicians (MD, DO)
• Nurse practitioners (NP)
• Physician assistants (PA)
• Dentists
• Pharmacists
• Healthcare organizations and group practices

The NPI is a public identifier — the NPPES registry is publicly accessible, which is what makes instant verification possible.

Compounded medications — particularly 503A patient-specific preparations — can only be ordered by licensed healthcare providers with prescribing authority. Verifying that a portal user is a licensed provider is not just a best practice — it is a compliance requirement.

Without NPI verification, a compounding portal has no reliable way to confirm that the person placing orders is actually a licensed provider. This creates significant liability for both the portal operator and the compounding pharmacy.

For individual licensed providers (MD, DO, NP, PA). You provide:

• NPI number (auto-fills everything else)
• Date of birth (for identity verification)
• Contact information
